CHAPTER 8

One night, a thunderstorm rolled in, shaking the walls of the trailer.

The rain leaked through the cracks in the ceiling, dripping onto the floor.

The wind howled outside, rattling the thin metal walls like they could blow away any second.

Vicky cried and begged to sleep with me and Tony. We huddled together, scared and hungry, listening to the rain pound down and the thunder roll across the sky.

There were no lights for comfort. No electricity.

We only had each other.

After what felt like hours, the storm finally passed.

But the silence, the hunger, and the loneliness stayed.
